Assignment 2A- Bug List

1.     The showers of the communal bathrooms in Jennings Hall on a Sunday night
Why it exists: The custodians do not clean the bathrooms over the weekend so by Sunday night it is absolutely disgusting.
2.     The lines at midtown that are overly crowded the one weekend your friends come to visit
Why it exists: Usually the time my friends visit is for a big game or a big event that is going on here in Gainesville, which means other students at UF will have visitors too, making midtown very over crowded.
3.     Getting stuck behind a slow driver on i75 (a single lane road) on my way back to Gainesville
Why it exists:  Many people on i75 have been driving very far distances and begin to get tired so they drive slower. Furthermore, Florida has a large senior population and they tend to drive slower than most people.
4.     The people who walk on the left side of the side walk instead of the right side and run into you on your way to class
Why it exists: Many kids on campus walk with their heads down and earphones in so they don’t realize they are on the wrong side of the sidewalk until they run into you.
5.     When people leave their wet clothes in the washer for hours in the Jennings hall laundry room when there are no other machines available
Why it exists: Many of these kids have never done laundry before and they seem to forget to set a timer of when to go back to get there clothes. But also, the number of washers available is not proportionate to the amount of residents in Jennings Hall.
6.     The very limited Red 1 parking spots in Norman hall
Why it exists: There are very limited spots on campus in general and Red 1 represents having the lowest amount of credits, so UF only has a very select few spots for ones with the least credits, since the majority of the school has more credits than this.
7.     Uber X drivers who make you call an Uber XL when you have one extra person than his car fits
Why it exists: Many uber drivers feel uncomfortable taking an extra person because they are scared of being pulled over by a cop.
8.     When my neighbors don’t pick up their dogs poop on my lawn
Why it exists: Many pet owners are too lazy to pick up their own dogs poop or forget to bring a bag on their walk.
9.     When my new white converse get really dirty after wearing them one time
Why it exists: Gainesville is very muddy so they get dirty really easily on game days or when it rains, which is very frequent. Converse are also made of cotton so it is really hard to clean them and when you do try it just spreads the dirt.
10. Running out of water bottles in my dorm room extremely fast
Why it exists: The drinking fountain in Jennings hall makes people sick so you have to drink water bottles. My roommate and friends will also take my water bottles when they run out because no one wants to carry cases of water bottles up the four flights of stairs.
11. Maintenance guys who come at 8am to change the air filter, that they just changed one week ago, in my dorm room
Why it exists: Jennings Hall has not been renovated for over 20 years so maintenance has to come change the air filters this often because they get filthy and also so we don’t get sick.
12. Having to walk across campus back to my dorm alone at 10pm after an exam
Why it exists: Many UF classes assign exams at really late times so that it doesn’t conflict with students’ day schedules.
13. Waiting for the machine at the gym when the person is just texting and not actually using it
Why it exists: The time I go to the gym is usually at the peak hour so I have to wait for every machine I want to use but at hours like this people are inconsiderate of the time they take to use the machines. People also believe that if they are just at the gym, even if they are on their phone not exercising, they are being productive.
14. Not giving the exact change when its only a couple cents and then receiving 90 pennies back
Why it exists: Many people now days don’t even carry change, so they never have the couple cents on them. I’ve seen many people even throw coins on the floor as if coins aren’t money.
15. Walking all the way back from Publix with groceries and waiting forever for the cross walk light to change on 13th street and University
Why it exists: This is a large intersection so each stop light lets the cars go for a pretty good amount of time so its inevitable that it will be a good amount of time until I can cross. But also the button to use the cross walk sometimes does not sense that you are there so it will skip your turn and I don’t believe the street workers are aware of this.
16. When someone says they’ll split the Uber with you to get back home but then they don’t
Why it exists: On the app you are able to request to split an Uber with someone but it doesn’t actually split the fare until the person accepts it. Many people will just not accept it and you don’t know that until it’s too late when it shows up on your credit card bill.
17. Walking down the five flights of stairs of Jennings Hall and then realizing its raining so you have to go back up to get your umbrella
Why it exists: Many times I will use my umbrella and leave it out of my bag to dry so I forget to put it back in my backpack before I leave for class the next day.
18. Carrying suitcases, that weigh more than me, up four flights of stairs in Jennings Hall
Why it exists:  Jennings hall has no elevators. They have one service elevator but the workers of Jennings hall do not allow us to use it.
19. Having a 8:30 am class on Thursday mornings
Why it exists: Many classes are only available at certain times and there are very limited seats, so when it is a required class you have no choice but to sign up for it.
20.  When the Jennings Hall bathrooms run out of hot water and I have to take freezing cold showers
Why it exists: Many people take showers around the same time and there is limited hot water so by the time I get the chance to take one it is cold. However, there are also times when the heater just breaks because this place is so old. Maintenance is aware of this frequent occurring problem but has not resolved the issue.
Reflection:
At first I was a little stumped on what really bugs me but once I started they all just started spewing out. I actually was able to think of more than 20, but what did make it challenging for me was answering why it exists. I never really ask the question “why” to myself so it was a new experience for me to act like an entrepreneur in asking this question. It made me think more deeper into these “bugs”, which ultimately led me to become aware of possible solutions that could make many of these bugs practically disappear.

  1. Hey Kaitlin, after living in a dorm my freshmen year, I find your bugs to be very relatable. I remember the bathrooms getting destroyed by a hall full of guys after a saturday night out and having to wait until Monday for it to get cleaned. The rest of your bugs are really relatable for any college student, especially ones at UF, which made your list interesting to read! We both seem to have the same problem with I-75 as well, hopefully there's a change soon! Keep up the good work.

  2. Hey Kaitlin,
I really enjoyed reading your list because I cam relate with most of your bugs. You are so right when you say in bug #2 that midtown and downtown can get very crowed when there is a special day at UF. And in bug #3 that is so true, I hate when someone drives too slow on I-75. Also, in bug # 7 when an uber X make you call for an uber XL for being more than 4 people, I know they are right but it is so annoying.

    Overall, great job!

  3. I can completely relate to bug #4 about people walking the wrong way. I honestly do not think that a lot of people realize that that is even something they are supposed to do, bu t it is very annoying especially in small hallways like in the College of Health and Human Performance building. Bug #16 is me in a nutshell, I always end up picking up the tab for my friends, and sometimes it's really annoying.
