My whole life my siblings and I
wanted a dog very badly. My dad was completely onboard, however my mom was not,
and whatever she says goes. She was worried she would be stuck doing everything
for the dog and have extra, unnecessary expenses, so I took it in my own hands to
devise a plan that proved this simply would not be the case. I began with a
PowerPoint that I would present to her explaining a system that would ensure
she, herself, would not be taking on the responsibility of what would seem like
another child. It simply was a schedule that we had to follow of who would feed
the dog at certain hours and who would walk him at certain hours. But to convince
her even more we added in the detail that we would agree to clean any areas she
felt like had too much dog hair. I knew she wouldn’t accept just general
statements so the PowerPoint was a full schedule that had specific times of who was responsible for the dog at those hours and the duties that came along with those hours that we all agreed to.
The more difficult part was the money
situation. However, after talking to the breeder, who we were supposed to get
the dog from, we reached an agreement. He agreed to provide all the required
shots for free and give us a 6-month supply of food for free. I explained to my
mom that that in itself is a lot of money that we wouldn’t have to spend. With
this deal and a secure system that I created, there would be no inconvenience
for her. Finally, she agreed to see the
dog and we left that day with a new family member, named Duke.
I enrolled in ENT3003 because I
believe much of our world requires entrepreneur skills. Being able to recognize
and solve problems is a large factor in developing our society and aiming at
making it better for everyone around us. And with this class it will give me
the opportunity to develop these skills. I hope to get out of this class the
ability to think more critically when it comes to real world situations. While at
the same time giving me first hand experience, so when it comes time in the
future I’m comfortable and confident in solving problems.

Hey Kaitlin, I loved reading your story about Duke! I'm glad you were able to bring him home because I think everyone should grow up with a dog. It was smart of you to understand the need for a specific plan and schedule in order to convince your mother into getting a dog. This is an important lesson for the real world too, showing that a plan and action are better to achieve results than just your word, especially for entrepreneurs in the early stages.
ReplyDeleteI loved your story so much and the picture of the dog is so cute. It resonated so much with me because my old girlfriend parents didn’t want her to go to college because they thought there was nowhere to live and apartments would be too far away from campus. I then created a power point addressing tons of transportation options, reviews and suggestions about student friendly housing, and then pricing options proving it was cheaper than dorms. In the end, she is happily living in a nice off campus and has multiple new best friends. I think that presenting your ideas and making them come true is a key part in entrepreneurship. I hope to read more of your post, it was very descriptive and easy to read.
ReplyDeleteI can completely understand the work that it takes to get a mom to agree to something. Whenever I wanted something out of the way, I would always plan out how and when I would ask my mom for it. I would write a list in my head and create an explanation for how we could afford it and why I needed or wanted it. I'm really glad your powerpoint worked out for you, Duke is really cute!
