Assignment 9A- Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Who: Through my interviews I noticed that very few fall outside this opportunity. People who may be too young to understand these types of things or businesses and certain people who simply do not care about firearm purchases may also fall outside. There are very few on the outside because this opportunity affects so many since the purchase of a gun can affect any bystander if used improperly
·      One person I interviewed simply didn’t believe any solution would resolve this problem we have. He believed that tragedy can always strike no matter what
·      Meanwhile, another person that strongly was against firearms still thought that service like the one I am offering would make her feel safer

·      When talking to someone that was very young, compared to the rest of the people’s ages I have been interviewing, she seemed aware of the current problem but didn’t really understand the logistics of it or how this service could actually be a benefit to her indirectly.

What: This is a very crucial need because in the long run it could affect people’s lives and safety. Even if someone is not using the service themselves, their need for safety is being met since, with this service in place, it limits others from purchasing a gun. Through my interviews, one person I interviewed did make a solid point: if someone wants a gun bad enough they will get it, even if it is illegally. Which of course is true. We can’t stop all bad, but this service is the step in the right direction in helping.

Why: I believe that the need is not different. It all lies within the fact if someone cares enough to want a change that will increase our protection of our lives and safety. Ones who believe this won’t help, ones who do not care, and ones who simply don’t understand still have the same general need of protection. There is also those who believe that if it doesn’t help completely then it isn’t helping at all, which is very naive.

Inside the Boundary

Who:   Twenty one year olds wanting to purchase a firearm
Citizens who can't or don't want to purchase a firearm but want to feel better              protected

What: To make it harder for people to purchase a firearm, especially if they are mentally unstable, so others within the society feel more protected

Why: This exists because of the recent tragedies that are making people feel unsafe

Outside the Boundary
Who: People or business who do not care or who do not understand the severity of the situation

What: To completely eliminate the problem of people who shouldn't have a gun from having them

Why (alternative explanation ): There is no additional service, currently, that makes it harder to purchase a gun, but some may simply think it won't work.

  1. Hi Kaitlin,
I found it really awesome that very few people fell outside of your opportunity. This really shows how much of a necessity your opportunity is for people. I found the person who was outside of your boundary interesting as he believed that bad things can/will happen no matter what so there is no point in trying to prevent it. This made me realize that there will always be people who feel that if something does not make a 100% change, there is no point in doing it. However, in most cases, making even the slightest change can truly make a difference in the world and for those who need particular opportunities such as an increase in safety as you discuss.

  2. I think your opportunity is strengthened by the few amount of people outside your boundary. In many cases people are uninformed or uninterested in engaging a change. But that is not an effective portion outside the boundary to compete with the vast majority inside your boundary. As Julia said, even a slight change can make a big difference.
